Leftover Generator: Turn Last Night Into Something New

Enter what is sitting in the fridge and this tool gives you four different directions for it: a bowl, a wrap, a soup and a hash. The point is a meal that tastes new, not reheated.

How it works

  1. 1List the leftovers and roughly how much you have.
  2. 2Say what else you can use, for example rice, eggs, tortillas or a bag of greens.
  3. 3You get four formats with quick methods, so you can pick by mood and by how much time you have.
  4. 4Reheat properly, then finish with something fresh: herbs, citrus, pickles or a crunchy topping.

Real examples

Roast chicken and rice
A chilli-crisp rice bowl, a wrap with quick pickled onion, a fast chicken and rice soup, or a crisp skillet hash with an egg.
Cooked vegetables and a little cheese
A frittata, a grain bowl with a lemony dressing, a blended vegetable soup, or a toasted sandwich.
Chilli or stewed beans
Loaded baked potato, taco filling, brothy soup with extra tomato, or a rice skillet with a fried egg.

Good to know

  • Food safety comes first. USDA guidance is that most cooked leftovers keep 3 to 4 days in a fridge at 40F (4C) or below, and should be reheated to 165F (74C).
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking. When in doubt, throw it out. Smell is not a reliable test.
  • Reheating cannot rescue food that was left out too long, and this tool cannot judge how your food was stored.

Frequently asked

How long do leftovers keep?
USDA guidance is 3 to 4 days refrigerated for most cooked leftovers, or freeze for longer storage. Reheat to 165F (74C).
Can I use the Leftover Generator for free?
Yes. Ideas are free to generate. A free account is only for saving them.
Can I reheat rice?
Yes, if it was cooled quickly and refrigerated promptly. Reheat it hot all the way through and do not keep it beyond the storage window.
